Making Sense In The World Of Watches

By Ferda Shinsky

Nothing conveys class and sophistication like an exquisite wrist watch. Throughout time these luxury items have instantly conveyed a persons social status. But in these modern times, it is important that you purchase a watch based on quality and not brand name.

A few of us are fortunate enough to inherit exquisite time pieces from members of our family, but for the majority of us that is not the case. It's not a bad thing though; choosing a new watch is part of the fun!

Before you decide on buying a watch for yourself or loved ones, look out for the certification of quality. This certification quality label is called chronometer design, given to a watch that has the highest standard of precision. Any luxury watches that carry the chronometer certification with them means that they have passed vigorous tests demanded by Switzerland's official rating bureau for chronometers (COSC).

You will also have to decide if you want a quartz watch or an automatic watch. A quartz watch uses a battery which has to be replaced, and are more common and less expensive. An automatic watch recharges itself using your body's own movements (ex: swinging of arms), so it never has to have a battery replaced. Unfortunately these watches are less common and more expensive, though they are more common in men's watches than women's.

If you are looking for a watch that performs under extreme conditions, you would be advised to look into a sector watch. These are usually waterproof up to 100 meters, and are designed for rugged outdoor use. Some also include things such as a compass or small light.

One of a wrist watch owners favorite privileges is the ability to pass their investment down between generations. A properly cared for timepiece can last over a hundred years, and create a sentimental family heirloom. Imagine how glad your grandchildren would be to receive your favorite watch!

It is imperative that you purchase the right type of watch for your intended uses. You don't want to buy a $10,000 watch and then have it break while you are camping in the woods. If you are looking for a sportier watch, you would be advised to go with a sector watch. For a more traditional watch, go with a quartz or automatic time piece.

If you are one of the more elite members of society, you may be looking for a watch with diamond, gold, or other precious metals. If this is the case, grab your checkbook and head to your local jewelers. Be advised, you'll be paying a pretty penny for that bling! - 16650
