In the market for handy kitchen gadgets? Kitchens are always ready for more new tools. No matter how many tools and pots you have, your kitchen will always want more. But the hungriest of all kitchens are the ones whose cooks are only just getting equiped. These are the kitchens with little more than mismatched knives, a thin aluminum pot with dents to match, and a scratched, cheap nonstick frying pan. Is your kitchen one like that described? Then it's time to go out and find these handy kitchen gadgets.
Most people own a fruit and vegetable peeler. Taking the outside skin off potatoes, carrots, apples, green mangoes and other similar types of fruits and vegetables cant simply be done by hand, unless you're a masochist who enjoys suffering. You can use a paring knife if you have one but its definitely easier and safer to use a peeler. It is also much faster!
Kitchen timer. You may not be a contestant on Iron Chef and have more than an hour to whip up a three-course meal. But hey, even you need to keep track of time while working at the kitchen! Keeping time is a must to avoid overcooking anything. After all, soggy pasta ruins your spaghetti; burnt pizza is annoying; and overcooking in general takes away the flavor from an otherwise tasty meal. Never mind that your microwave has a built-in timer. You still need a separate kitchen timer because one day someday, you'll have to cook something on open fire or on the stove or cook several dishes at the same time!
Microplane grater. There must have been a way to get by before the Microplane grater and other handy kitchen gadgets although it's not known to me how chefs in the olden days managed to grate nutmeg, zest, and ginger for their culinary creations.
Garlic press. Garlic is an integral spice in many recipes. You name a main course, and chances are it calls for garlic. So if you have a garlic press, then you can speed up the process. Instead of cutting each clove individual after peeling off the skin, you can put it in with all of its skin and press! This is said by many to get more flavour from the garlic into the food.
Measuring spoons and cups. Even expert cooks and chefs have these handy. Theres just no substitute for measuring tool. If you want your food to taste consistently, the first step is to make sure your ingredients are accurately proportionate. Having too much of something changes the outcome of the entire recipe.
It pays to own a Corkscrew. Whether youre fond of wines or not, you might run into the need for one of these at the drop of a hat. You dont need to get an expensive one, but dont buy the cheapest one you see for sure. You want one that keeps the cork in one piece and does the job without breaking the rim or shaking the sediments up. So, make sure you and your date (or your family) get to enjoy that bottle of red wine they brought to your home by being equipped with a corkscrew.
Spatulas (solid and wok). A wok spatula is for stir-frying. A solid spatula is for lifting and turning. And no, you're not being asked to choose between these two handy kitchen gadgets. Rather, get them both!
Whisks (balloon and flat). The flat whisk lets you get into one corner of a pan while you stir sauces. On the other hand, the balloon whisk lets you add volume. Start whisking your way to fluffier mixes with balloon and flat whisks.
Food processor. In this day and age, why deprive yourself the joy of cooking with handy kitchen gadgets such as the food processor? These tools can chop, dice, and puree without all that hand work.
You don't have to buy these handy kitchen gadgets at one time but you can't NOT get them either. Start with the measuring tools, the timer, spatulas, and processor then work your way through the list. Soon, these items won't just be kitchen fixture, they'll be your hardy little helpers. - 16650
