Making Popcorn at Home Taste Like Movie Theater Popcorn

By Tom Fischer

If you are like most popcorn lovers, you will sometimes go to the movies just to get have some great tasting movie theater popcorn. Don't worry, many people do, but only a few know, that home popcorn can be just as delicious as movie theater popcorn.

The best home popcorn popper for this is a Whirley Pop Popcorn Maker, which is a stovetop popcorn maker. It consists of an aluminum pan with a clip on lid, that has a stay-cool handle you turn while popping, which rotates a stirring mixer inside of your Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper. This stirring system keeps the popping corn in motion across the bottom of the Whirley Pop's pan, distributing heat and oil evenly. The steam vents on top of the Whirley Popper lets moisture escape.

First things first, you have to decide how much popcorn you'll want to pop and prepare the ingredients based on the following:

Quarts of Popcorn | Amount of Oil | Amount of Corn

2 |1 tablespoon | 1/3 Cup

4 |2 tablespoon | 2/3 Cup

6 |2 tablespoons | 1 Cup

8 |3 tablespoons | 1 1/4 Cups

Once the ingredients are prepared, follow these steps:

1. There is no need to preheat the popper or the oil.

2. Put the Whirley Pop Popcorn Maker and the above ingredients onto stove (either gas or electric, it makes no difference) and turn it to medium heat. Don't add any seasoning yet, just the oil and corn.

3. Slowly rotate the lever, and adjust the stove temperature so popping finishes after approximately 3 min.

4. Turn the lever through the entire popping process until there is only an occasional pop every 2-3 seconds.

5. Take the Whirley Pop Popcorn Maker off the stove immediately.

6. Pour the popcorn into a serving bowl.

7. Pour some butter and sprinkle some salt or popcorn seasoning onto your popcorn and enjoy!

Whirley Pop Popcorn Popping Tips

* Don't set the heat too high, medium heat is enough.

* 1-2 tablespoons of oil is plenty.

* Use quality corn.

With the recipe above, you will see, that it is very possible to make movie theater style popcorn in your own home. It will be healthier as well, since they add a lot of artificial ingredients and flavors to movie popcorn due to its almost being mass produced, so even though the Whirley pop uses oil, it will still be healthier.

For those of you who are even more concerned about healt, you might want to try a hot air popper. It uses hot air to pop the corn instead of hot oil, and will result in a virtually zero calorie popcorn treat. It won't have the same taste though, however, you can still add some home prepares seasoning and sprinkle it on, or even some butter at the end. As you might guess, the butter increases the calorie count of the snack. Generally speaking air popped popcorn has 31-55 calories in one cup of popped popcorn, which increases to 133 calories when lightly buttered. - 16650
