Fad diets are diets that have been created to be used for a small amount of time. Another popular culture meaning for the term is a diet that becomes wildly popular for a period of a a small number of months to a a small number of years, and then fades into obscurity. The Hollywood diet, the Atkins diet, and Jenny Craig are just three examples.

Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. A food weight loss fad is a phenomenon in which some food or category of food suddenly becomes very popular in a very short period of time. These generally have some common elements, including:

- Apparently the food is attributed with miraculous powers. - Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do adverse things.

As an instance of these fundamentals of fad diets in the diet, take the Atkins diet. In this diet carbohydrates are the Keystone component that is negative and as a result to be avoided. Low carbohydrates are extremely desirous in Atkins, because it follows that the body enters a super fat burning state. This diet even included short periods, followed by sustained phases. But Dr. Atkins did intend that persons could eat this way for the rest of their lives.

How All Fad Diets Become Popular as with many have diets, Atkins popularity was very hyped and short-lived. It lasted a few years during which it seemed everyone you talked to was on the diet . People from Hollywood actors to politicians were all going on the Atkins diet. When Dr. Atkins died to stardom of his diet went with him.

Fad Diets Are They Dangerous

Fad diets can be unhealthy. The Subway diet made widespread in television commercials wasn't exempt. At its center was a young guy named Jarred who had lost hundreds of pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches. In reality Jarred reduced his caloric intake from over 10,000 calories a day to only 900. Doctors have the same opinion that weight loss on that scale isn't healthy. The diet did contain many positive things such as exercise, like walking.
