Acne Scar Chemical Peel - Using At Home Acne Scar Peels

By Eileen Childs

If you have acne scars, one of the ways that you can remove them is through a chemical peel. It is important to pick the right kind of chemical peel, because there can be associated dangers. However, there are some chemical peels that can be done from the comfort of your own home.

Acne can often leave unwanted holes, marks or scars on the skin. The good news is, mild acne scars will often go away on their own. This happens when the skin sloughs off old dead skin cells, leaving new skin cells below. If your scars are not very deep, the skin will heal itself through this process over time. Unfortunately this is not the case with moderate or severe scars. Because they are deeper, they usually do not have the ability to go away on their own.

The reason you need to be careful with acid peels, is because they can burn the skin. Chemical peels work by burning the outer layers of skin. Common types of facial peels include phenolic peels and glycolic acid peels.

Chemical facial peels have been proven to be a very effective way to remove scars and marks left by acne. A facial peel can be performed by a doctor or at home. Doctors have access to stronger peels than the ones that are used at home. When stronger peels are used, it could involve a longer time to recover, may involve a hospital stay and can cost as much as $3,000.

Peels sold for home use have been approved by the FDA and are milder. Skin Culture USA makes chemical peels for home use that have proven to be quite effective and affordable. Rather than using acid, these peels work by depriving the top layers of skin of oxygen. Their peels are offered in four different strengths and cost one to two hundred dollars.

Obviously cost and the severity of your scars are an important factor when deciding whether you will choose an at home peel or one done by a doctor. Fortunately, you can significantly improve the appearance of your acne scars by using an at home facial peel, even if they do not go away completely. - 16650

After Tubal Reversal - How to Travel

By Sandra Wilson

After tubal reversal surgery, many women find they have several questions. Those who travel to their surgeon especially have questions regarding their return trip and after they get home. We will provide answers to four of the most common in this article about tubal reanastomosis.

If you have decided to have your tubal reanastomosis done by a premiere surgeon such as Dr. Gary Berger of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, your first question will be about the flight home. How soon after the surgery can you leave? Now, if you are questioning why you would fly somewhere else to get this operation done, you should check out the author's other articles on selecting a tubal reversal doctor or check the resources listed below.

You will have to spend at least one night at your hotel after tubal reversal surgery. In the morning, you should be checked by the doctor or a nurse. If you live within the continental U.S., you will then be free to fly home. So, you go home the day after the surgery. But, if you have further to travel, you would be wise to wait at least another day or two before heading back home.

Now you know when you are leaving, your next thought may be about the trip home itself and what you should do to be more comfortable. You will find that a small pillow will come in handy to lay across your stomach area to provide bracing. It helps if your companion likes to keep you laughing, too.

After tubal reversal surgery, you should be given some pain medication. Take this for the flight home. If the doctor allows, you might even add some ibuprofen to the mix. Discuss this with your doctor especially if the flight home is a long one or there might be some rough weather you will be traveling through.

If it is available, a direct flight is the best way to go. Tell the gate attendant that you just had surgery and need to board before the other passengers. Contact the appropriate person to have a wheel chair or cart waiting to get you around the airport. If you must change flights en route, this will be very helpful.

Seeing your doctor at home is usually the next question asked after tubal reversal. You want to know if you need to make an appointment to see him. If he is the one that sent you to the surgeon, it might be a good idea to go see him when you get home. But, otherwise, it is up to you and whether or not it would make you more comfortable to do so.

This leads to one more question about what you should do for any questions or concerns you may have after tubal reversal. If you have chosen Dr. Berger for your surgeon, not only is there email and a 24 hour telephone number, there is also a moderated message board available for your questions and to connect with other tubal reanastomosis patients. You will want to make sure your surgeon has some similar ways of contacting him or his staff and quickly and easily getting your questions answered. - 16650

Weight Loss, How Alcohol Will Make You Fatter

By Ricardo d Argence

Over the years, there has been a lot of information spread around about weight loss. New diets here and a new gadget over there. There has however been little said on the effects of alcohol and weight loss. That is what we will look at here today.

Alcohol like most everything else contains calories, however, there are a few major differences. The first problem is that all the calories from alcohol are worthless, this means is that not one single calorie from alcohol has any nutritional value, they are empty calories.

As with other calories, those from alcohol are converted in the liver in the body. Alcohol calories are kind of like bullies, as they must be burned first, all other calories are patiently stored. And we all know what stored calories are, they are fat.

When drinking alcohol, you will consume twice as many calories of carbohydrates and proteins that come from food. What this means is alcohol provides seven calories per gram as opposed to carbohydrates, which contain four calories per gram. Simply put, when you gulp four 12-ounce beers then you might have consumed about 600 calories! It is easy to see how prolonged use of alcohol could pack on the pounds.

A last note about alcohol's caloric effects involves mixers. Many popular alcoholic drinks are actually a mix of different substances. These additive ingredients can cause the calorie total to add up quickly. For example, one long island ice tea has an astounding 740 calories. You could get half of the calories recommended for one day in just one drink.

Another key ingredient to weight loss is your metabolism. Your metabolism is the sum of physical and chemical reactions in your cells to produce energy. Or more simply put the rate at which your body processes calories into energy. Alcohol slows this entire process, in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a person on a 1250 calorie diet where 250 of the calories were from alcohol could see as much as a 36% reduction in their metabolism. This means that you are processing calories nearly forty percent less efficiently.

Many people who consume alcohol regularly inform that at first they feel much better. On the other hand, you can suffer from depression if you drink to excess, since alcohol is actually a depressive substance. If you are feeling depressed it will feel a lot harder to diet, actually people are known to eat more as a way of comforting themselves. A vicious cycle if you stop and think about it. Depression can cause lack of motivation as well as making you less likely to want to continue any kind of exercise routine.

Water is an important factor in basic health but it is also important in muscle building. Muscles require a sufficient amount of hydration to function properly, without it, they can become weak and inefficient. Alcohol dehydrates the body because of the massive amounts of water the kidneys require to process the toxin from the body.

Too much drinking causes damage to various organs, but one drink a day is actually good for most people's health. Besides the issues it may cause for weight reduction, there are also medical concerns to keep in mind. If you are over weight, and are trying to drop it, you will loose more weight if you do not drink alcohol. Until you get control of your weight, red wine is the best choice if you must drink. - 16650

Weight Loss Options for the Clinically Obese

By Amy Nutt

Those who are struggling with clinical obesity are often tempted to turn to lapband weight loss surgery as their first option. However, before you make this drastic choice, you should make sure that you have pursued all of your other options.

The Natural Way

The natural way to lose weight is to increase your caloric output while decreasing your caloric intake. Of course, this is easier said than done, and it does not lead to rapid weight loss. For some, losing weight the natural way does not create change fast enough to help with the serious health problems that come with obesity.

If you do try to go the natural route to deal with your obesity, you need to focus on eating fresh foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be a staple of your diet. You also need to eat whole grains, not refined grains. At least half of your grains should be whole grains. These help you to feel full and do not cause the blood sugar crashes common with refined grains. For your protein, choose poultry and lean meats. Eat more fish, as it contains healthy oils that your body needs. Beans, nuts, and seeds are alternative healthy sources of protein.

Increasing your caloric output is also essential to natural weight loss. If you are significantly overweight, this can be difficult, but even a brisk walk is considered exercise and will help. Make it your goal to spend 30 minutes in some sort of activity every day whenever possible. As you lose weight, increase the intensity of your workout. Keep it varied in order to encourage yourself to stick with it.

Weight Loss Drugs

Another alternative to weight loss surgery is taking a weight loss drug. There are both prescription and over the counter weight loss medications available. They work by either suppressing your appetite or blocking some of the fat that you eat from being absorbed into your body. These work in conjunction with lifestyle changes to help you lose weight more quickly. However, they can have uncomfortable side effects, so make sure you do your research before choosing to use weight loss drugs.

Weight Loss Surgery

If natural weight loss methods are not working fast enough and you are not able or willing to use weight loss drugs, you may need to consider weight loss surgery. However, this is only an option if your body mass index is 40 or higher. You may qualify if your BMI is 35 or higher if you have a serious health complication that is caused by your weight.

Gastric bypass is one weight loss surgery option. In this procedure, the physician will create a small stomach pouch by stapling the stomach and attaching the resulting pouch to the middle part of the small intestine. This limits both the amount of food you can eat by making the stomach smaller, and also the amount of calories your body absorbs by bypassing part of the small intestine. Portions of the stomach and intestine are removed, making this a permanent change.

Another popular weight loss surgery is the Lap Band surgery. LapBand is an adjustable gastric banding device that is placed around the stomach laparoscopically. It creates a small stomach pouch, thus limiting the amount of food that is eaten. Many patients choose Lap Band surgery over gastric bypass because it is far less invasive and does not permanently change the digestive system.

A third, rarely used option is a biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. This creates the small stomach pouch and connects it to the last part of the small intestine, bypassing most of the small intestine. It is rarely used because it puts patients at risk of malnutrition when compared to other weight loss surgery options. If you are considering weight loss surgery, be sure to discuss each of these three options with your doctor in detail so you can choose the best one for your body's unique needs. - 16650
