Mad Dieter - You Know Who You Are!

By Samantha Putz

Celebrities for the most part have tremendous pressure on their shoulders to be the best and look the best. They resort to all kinds of fad diets to keep them in check for the world to scrutinize. Low carbs, fat free foods, low calories and a lot of perspiration. Is this the life you deem normal and accepted? Constantly thinking about your next meal, your next workout or your next weigh in? It's exhausting just to think about it. Most stars will admit this lifestyle isn't your typical dream life, but it doesn't seem to deter them one bit, so what can the girl next door do? Follow the next diet trend and hope this time your hard work will pay off? I've been on this ride many times and have been unsuccessful. So why have all these diets failed us? Let's look at some common diet fads.

Sugar and Starch are what fuels the body and the brain with much needed energy. Without these important carbohydrates, your body suffers from cumbersome symptoms such as fatigue, headaches and hunger pangs. Diets that herald eating low carb foods like Atkins and the Zone set you up for failure because as humans, we are not designed to live without carbs. Although initially, the weight loss is rapid, you're soon faced with unsurmountable cravings that lead you to the "junk" cupboard or the drive-thru at some fast food restaurant for a quick carb fix. The World Health Organization suggests our food intake comprise of at least 55-75% carbs. Anything lower and your body starts to react, leaving you feeling ill. Is this how you want to live the rest of your life?

With low carb diets debunked, let's look at another fad diet. Eating "good" carbs. These carbs (or so they say) healthy and help you lose weight " however, these "good" carbs are also calorie-dense. They have a lot more nutritional value than do refined foods, but calories are calories " you aren't going to lose weight eating huge portions of whole wheat pasta. You can only burn so many calories in a day, so it really doesn't matter if you eat just good carbs; you will gain weight if you eat more than you can expend, simple as that. Why can some people eat more than others and not gain weight? There are two reasons " they eat their carbs evenly throughout the day and of course, metabolic rate is also a factor.

A fat free diet is also a poor choice. Many think that fat free means a leaner me, however, more often then not, these foods are loaded with sugar which is stored into fat. Don't fall for the line that honey is better than sugar either; they are both calorie rich, regardless of the source. Go for foods which are low in sugar (and low calorie) instead of foods which are fat free. Are diets a waste of time then? They are if you don't know how your body processes food into energy and how your body uses calories. If you want to learn to eat right and look great, do your research and find something that fits your lifestyle and tastes. If you fall off the wagon, just get right back on it and never give up. You may never get the celebrity body of your dreams, but I'm betting that if you can get to your ideal weight, be more energetic and healthy, you will be thrilled with the new you. - 16650
